Hatchy Milatchy

Today I decided to lighten things up. Those of us who grew up in NE PA in the 1960's have a song playing in our heads. You no doubt should remember it well since it was part of the morning cartoon lineup on WNEP TV channel 16. Terri and I were on the phone today and for some reason, we brought up the topic of Hatchy Milatchy and both of us knew a surprising number of the words. Enjoy...

There's a wonderful place that you really should see
Called the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
All boys and girls love this place yes siree
Called the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Peppermint candy and ice cream is free
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Soda pop fountains are under each tree
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Everyone rides on a-merry-go-round
All made of sugar and spice
Lollipops grow right out of the ground
The moon's made of strawberry ice
If you should run and you trip and you fall
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
The ground's made of rubber you bounce like a ball
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy

Oh you-play the whole day and you don't go to bed
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Mommies and Daddies are put there instead
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Hundreds of bunnies lay Easter eggs
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Ride on a pony with candy strip legs
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Each day is always a big holiday
Birthdays and parties galore
Dollies and bicycles given away
Whenever you walk in a store
When I return then I never will leave
The Land of Hatchy Milatchy
If you want to go all you do is believe
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy

one day a few months ago my wife and kids came back from the library with the assorted cd's and books. they put on one of the cd's, and what do i hear filling my house with joyful song-- the "hatchy milatchy" theme. it was right there on the greatest hits of rosemary clooney. I attempted to explain the significance of this melody to my life, but it was lost on the three outsiders before me, my wife, 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter. none of them ever had the pleasure of seeing the best show ever on tv. fritz araya seattle, wa

Hi Fritz,

Shortly after I posted this entry Rob Crawford shared his own Hatchy Milatchy story. When Rob was 6 years old, he heard Miss Judy call HIS NAME on his birthday. I was completely awestruck by that revelation.

I always wondered if the calling of one's name on a birthday celebration by Miss Judy pre-ordained one to a charmed life, no doubt the outcome experienced by our good friend, Rob.

OK, I'm just having fun. If you ever had Miss Judy call out your birthday on the show, my hat is off to you. Long live Miss Judy and WNEP-TV!

We've all had charmed lives. Miss Judy, Rocky Glen, Hanson's Park, San Souci, Angela Park,.... I don't know how the kids who grew up without these things ever managed to survive!

I wonder how many of you actually knew that I worked on Hatchy Miliatchy from 1983-86 doing many of the puppets with Miss Judy. It's one of my best kept secrets in life. That's what a Bishop O'Reilly education gets you!

Miss Judy and the Land of Hatchy Milatchy was originally sung by Rosemary Clooney. Miss Judy spent a short visit in rehab sometime in the early 70's (mom said it was cocaine addiction). While she was "away" her stand up was a magician...Uncle Ted? Anyhow...crank calling "Dialing for Dollars" was a lot of fun!
